How expense splits work
How to split expenses equally or by amount, record income and repayments, and check what each person owes.
01
What an expense records
Each entry records an amount, a date, who paid, and how the cost is shared. Add a description and, if useful, a category and notes. The currency must match the group. Choose expense, income, or transfer to match the transaction.
The payer is the person who covered the bill. Each member’s share is the part they’re responsible for. TmCount uses these amounts to calculate balances. It doesn’t move money between bank accounts.
02
Equal splits
Choose the members who share the bill. TmCount divides the amount equally between them. For example, an €80 dinner split between four people costs €20 each. If one person paid the whole bill, the other three each owe them €20, before accounting for other expenses.
You don’t have to include everyone in the group. Leave someone out if they didn’t share that cost.
03
Custom splits
Use custom shares when people owe different amounts. For example, someone may have had only drinks or taken a larger room. Enter each person’s amount and check that the shares add up to the total.
If you’ve agreed to split a bill by percentage, calculate each person’s amount and enter those amounts as custom shares.
04
Income and transfers
Use income for money coming into the group, such as a refund. Use a transfer to record money paid from one member to another, such as a cash repayment. Recording repayments keeps the balances up to date.
You can edit or delete an incorrect entry. The group’s history keeps a record of the change so other members can see what happened.
